Whether you are powered by wind, paddle, motor or fin, Dartmouth and Kingswear have the facilities and services to support you. See our Dartmouth Information pages for more details.

Sailing and yachting

Dartmouth has been synonymous with sailing since the middle ages, and Warfleet Creek has been used as a safe haven from the Crusades up to the Normandy landings. The Pottery is ideal for dinghy sailors to store and launch their own boats just 40m from the front door, and is a short and scenic walk from the town and all the water activities and sailing in both Dartmouth and Kingswear, via the ferry. For yacht sailors, the harbour boasts 2 yacht clubs, with further clubs upstream at Dittisham and Stoke Gabriel. For beginners, there are numerous opportunities to hire sailing boats of all sizes, as well as several RYA accredited sailing schools. Dartmouth's annual Regatta held in August features racing for boats of all types, plus a host of on-shore entertainment.

Canoeing and kayaking

The garage at the apartment is large enough so keep several canoes and kayaks, with a short 40m walk down to the waterside where you can launch in safety. Once in the water, you are around 1/2 mile from Dartmouth Castle and the sea, with tall cliffs and secluded coves both north and south of the river. Heading upstream, through Dartmouth harbour, the river winds past Dittisham to Totnes, approx 10 miles away, the limit of the tidal river. White water action is available in the upper reaches of the river on Dartmoor. Don't have a canoe of your own? There are opportunities to hire a canoe or join in a group river adventure, exploring the wildlife or learning bushcraft skills.

Scuba diving

Besides its use as a sheltered harbour, Warfleet Creek was also an original training centre for the British Sub Aqua Club. Today, Dartmouth and the South Hams coast still offers calmer seas and better visibility than most other UK locations. Divers can shore dive from Castle Cove (just 15 minutes walk away from The Pottery) or use one of the local dive operators to explore the many wrecks and reefs along the coastline. Dartmouth is an ideal location for you to explore the River Dart, Estuary and Coastline.

Power boats and boat hire

Though obviously focussed on sailing, the River Dart welcomes power boat users too. Whether you own your own boat or wish to hire one, Dartmouth and Kingswear can accommodate you, with marinas, slipways, onshore storage and chandlers on both sides of the river. The sheltered marinas are an ideal base to explore the river, the coast and some of Britain's cleanest beaches. Skippered boats can be hired for fishing and diving parties, or smaller self-drive cruisers and ribs can be hired by the hour or chartered by the day. The sailing schools also offer powerboat certification courses for those taking their first step into the cruising community.

The Pottery

This local landmark building has recently been renovated to the highest standard, retaining many attractive architectural features. The apartment is a spacious one-bedroomed duplex layout, sleeping up to 4, set over 2 floors.
