Family fun

Families can enjoy the historic old town, with an interesting variety of shopping opportunities, craftsmen and galleries. Kids can make new friends while catching crabs on the quayside or take a fishing rod along the coast path. Take the ferry across to Kingswear for the steam railway to Paignton. Head to Totnes on a river cruise, or out to sea on a wildlife tour. Further afield, the Woodland Leisure Park has safe rides and activities especially for younger children, or get wet and wild at the Quay West water park – take the steam train there, then carry on to the multiplex cinema in Torbay. Naturalists can visit Paignton zoo, the Living Coasts sealife centre in Torquay, or many farm-based activities, adventures and nature trails around South Hams.

Exploring the Beaches and Coasts

South Hams’ family-friendly beaches are among the cleanest in the UK. The award-winning Blackpool beach is a short drive south, while the eaches on the south coast (such as Bantham) offer opportunities for surfing. There are numerous places to buy or hire boats, wetsuits and snorkels to explore the river and the sea.

Events and Attractions

The big summer event is Dartmouth Regatta in August, with a host of races in the harbour and out at sea, plus funfairs, air displays and tours of warships. For sport enthusiasts, there are several golf courses on either side of the River dart, Cyclists can also enjoy many challenges both on and off road. Dartmouth also has a small cinema and theatre, with a programme of films, musicians and entertainers.
