Easy access to Activities and Beaches around Dartmouth
There are so many things to do in Dartmouth and around South Devon, and the Pottery is an excellent base for families from which to explore them. The area offers events, outdoor activities, leisure parks, food and drink, on land and on the water to suit all ages. Located only a scenic 20 minute walk from the beautiful and atmosperic town centre, you can link up with boats and trains to take you further afield. The Pottery lies at Warfleet Creek adjacent to the back road in and out of Dartmouth, avoiding the tourist traffic. For further information visit our Dartmouth Information pages.
Family fun
Your family can enjoy the atmosphere of the old town, with an interesting variety of shopping opportunities, craftsmen and artist's galleries.
Kids can make new friends while catching crabs on the quayside or take a rod along the coast path to fish from the rocks. Cross on the ferry to Kingswear and take the steam railway to Paignton.
Alternatively, head to Totnes on a river cruise, or out to sea on a wildlife tour. Further afield, the Woodland Leisure Park is full of safe rides and activities
especially for younger children, or get wet and wild at the Quay West water park - take the steam train there, then carry on to a film at the multiplex cinema in
Torbay. A short bus ride from the station, you can visit Paignton zoo, or the Living Coasts sealife centre in Torquay. There are also many farm-based activities,
adventures and nature trails to enjoy around South Hams.
Exploring the Beaches and Coasts
The beaches of South Hams are among the cleanest in the UK, and generally family-friendly. The sheltered and award-winning Blackpool beach lies a short drive south, while the beaches on the south coast (such as Bantham) offer better opportunities for surfing. There are numerous places to buy or hire boats, wetsuits and snorkels with which to explore the river and the sea. On land, the South West Coast Path can be accessed at many points, including the Start Point lighthouse. Walkers will find many scenic routes inland, especially on Dartmoor.
Events and Attractions
The big event of the summer is Dartmouth Regatta at the end of August, with a host of races in the harbour and out at see, plus funfairs, air displays and tours of visiting warships.
Other local attractions include a number of scenic National Trust Properties. Dartmouth's galleries and artists' studios often hold special exhibitions.
For sport enthusiasts, there are several golf courses on either side of the River Dart,
Cyclists can also enjoy many challenges both on and off road.
Dartmouth also has a small cinema and theatre, with a programme of films, musicians and entertainers.
Eating out
Dartmouth is blessed with many restaurants and pubs, most of which are very family friendly. From fine dining on top class fish dishes, through traditional and foreign cuisine, to eating perfect crab sandwiches or ice creams on the harbour side, there's something to delight everyone. Outside the town, there is excellent food in many village pubs, and some superb restaurants right on the local beaches – see our page on eating and drinking in Dartmouth.
